MEET THE MAKERS

BLACK STAR IN SUNSHINE – Kathy Morsell
This wonderful planet and the fascinating humans who inhabit it have all helped me along with my journey. Reflecting my experiences in Japan and now over thirty years here in Northern New Mexico I consider my work East meets West. Using traditional handbuilding methods I learned under an apprenticeship with Mary Witkop, a master micaceous potter, I have changed clay bodies and am using my own glazes. My many years as a chef are realized in the creation of constantly changing functional wares that invite us all to slow down and enjoy a  handcrafted meal on hand crafted wares – together!  Paz y amor…

CROWHEART JEWELRY – Babette Hartman
Babette Hartman has dedicated her collections to the magical symbolism of the ancient world, reviving it and remaking it to meet the needs of the 21st century.
In my work I like to evoke the feeling of an ancient relic, a piece long forgotten, then suddenly revealed. The symbols and materials I use come from our ancestors and have many uses. Many symbols and talismans are universal and found throughout the world’s cultures. They remind us that we are one people, one tribe. I use bronze and copper because these are metals that have been used for centuries to create objects of power and healing. I incorporate other metals such as silver and gold. I work with the world of crystals and gemstones for their unique and healing properties. Each piece is hand made by me. I am honored to be able to carry on such a very old tradition.

DON WILSON
Don Wilson is relatively new to wood turning. Where we just may see a woodpile in our backyards, Don has discovered treasures in his. Don’s collection includes bowls, vases and pens.

JUDI GOOLSBY
Judi Goolsby is a native of Louisville, Kentucky and a 1965 graduate of Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. Much of her childhood was spent in the South including summers in the bayous of Louisiana after the death of her father in WWII. Known best for her writing skills and and her brightly colored, multi-layered paintings, Judi did not study art formally. Her images are sometimes primitive and naive with a poetic humor that reflects her view of the world. A new “Sense Of Place” series in black and white with color focuses on special things in Judi’s life that have their own story. Judi is a Narrative acrylic painter and the author of  Y’All…painted memories of the South, a collection of paintings and the stories that inspired them from her childhood in the South.

KAT SCHILKE
Kat’s work mainly focuses on the use of vintage indigo from Mali, and from other parts of the world. She then add embroidered detailing to them creating serapes, shawls and handbags. Kat also works with Mali mudcloth, both vintage and contemporary, obtained through African traders. She then does all the hand stitching and leather cutting for the four plat braided straps used on the bags.

MARK MADE
Mark Made is a custom furniture maker, wood craft creator and stylist here in Santa Fe.  Even with a full complement of woodworking machinery, Mark prefers to use hand tools to make the final shape the wood says it wants to be.  Useful items from pens, key chains and seam rippers to decorative bowls, boxes and platters are among the handcrafted creations you will see.

modernmuse61 – R. Melinda Hoffman
R. Melinda Hoffman studied fine art, and fashion design at School of The Art Institute of Chicago, then went on to design clothing for women & children for 25 years. On the side she made accessories re-purposed from found objects, which she sold at art shows and markets. Having a wanderlust spirit and a passion to travel the open road, she decided in 2013 to quit her job and follow her bliss. When she couldn’t find accessories to accommodate her new lifestyle, she designed ones to fit her every need. Thus, modernmuse61 was born. Melinda is now a Leather Artisan and Vintage Dealer, who travels from coast to coast, finding inspiration from old school technology, vintage industrial gadgets, architectural artifacts, and especially from the folks she meets on the road.

PJ ROGERS
Irrepressible PJ discovered art at an early age and returned to it over and over through the years, while drafting at a mechanical engineering firm and then starting a business showing horses in Houston. When she moved to Santa Fe in the 80s, PJ started creating in earnest; first working in stone and ceramics, sculpting, designing and fabricating furniture and jewelry, and then landing on wood turning. This show features PJ’s handmade jewelry and belt buckles—both fabricated and cast in precious metals with precious and semi-precious stones and pearls.
